Your first Pilates class: a practical preparation guide

Pilates is not a race
Pilates emphasises breathing, core control and precise movement. Your first class is about understanding your body position and learning to stay stable as you breathe, rather than attempting the hardest exercise. Fitlets_Milk focuses on mat Pilates, sometimes with small props.
What should you bring?
Wear comfortable exercise clothing that allows the coach to observe your posture, and bring water and a small towel. Confirm requirements for socks, mats and props before booking. Avoid starting immediately after a large meal and allow time to arrive and settle in.
Share your experience and physical circumstances
You can enquire even if you have never exercised before. Mention injuries, discomfort, pregnancy or postnatal circumstances and explain your goals. Seek medical advice first if needed. Stop and tell the coach if you experience pain or dizziness during class.
Small class or personal training?
Small classes can suit people who enjoy company and want a regular routine. Personal training offers more time for basic breathing, movement and an individual pace. Choose according to your schedule, budget and needs.
What should you notice afterwards?
Consider whether the instructions were clear, exercises were suitably adapted and the time and location fit your routine. A single class or a change on the scales cannot tell the whole story. Build a manageable routine and discuss progress with your coach.
