Students using yoga wheels and blocks for Pilates core stretches Pilates

Pilates core training | Mat Pilates classes

Pilates focuses on breathing, control and core engagement. Steady, deliberate movements build awareness of alignment and muscle coordination. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early twentieth century, it was originally called “Contrology”, emphasising conscious control of each movement.

Fitlets_Milk teaches mat Pilates, sometimes using yoga wheels, blocks and other props. Reformer machines are not required, and the movement principles can carry into everyday life.

Pilates training focus

  • Main focusCore stability, posture and coordination
  • Training methodMat-based movements with optional props
  • Pace and intensitySteady movements, prioritising quality over speed
  • Suitable forPeople seeking core strength, posture and movement control; desk workers and beginners

Benefits of Pilates

Regular practice can strengthen deep abdominal and trunk muscles and improve alignment awareness for sitting and standing. It also provides a core foundation for activities such as TRX、Circuit training. For a comparison with yoga, see thePilates FAQs。

Students doing planks with TRX straps TRX

TRX | Whole-body strength and core stability

TRX suspension straps support body-weight exercises across different movement planes. Difficulty can be adapted while training strength, stability and coordination. Developed by former US Navy SEAL Randy Hetrick, suspension training is widely used in fitness and functional training.

A key feature is that changing your angle changes the challenge: a more upright position is generally easier, while a greater lean adds difficulty. Beginners and experienced students can work at their own level in the same class.

TRX training focus

  • Main focusWhole-body strength, core stability and functional movement
  • Training methodStrap-assisted and resistance exercises
  • Pace and intensityFrom gentle to challenging, adjusted through position and angle
  • Suitable forPeople seeking variety, strength, stability or body-shaping exercise

Is TRX suitable for beginners?

Yes. Most TRX exercises engage the core to stabilise the body while working several muscle groups. Beginners can first build a Pilates core foundation and gradually increase the difficulty. See the TRX FAQs。

Fitball | Balance and core engagement

A fitness ball's unstable surface engages stabilising muscles for core, balance and coordination work, adding interest and challenge. Originating in Italy in the 1960s and later used by Swiss physiotherapists, it is also known as a Swiss ball.

Circuit training | Fitness and body shaping

Circuit training moves between several exercise stations, combining strength and cardio at a lively pace. Developed in the 1950s by R. E. Morgan and G. T. Adamson at the University of Leeds, it remains a widely used fitness format.

Circuit-training focus

  • Main focusOverall fitness, muscular endurance and workout rhythm
  • Training methodMultiple stations with short rests between them
  • Pace and intensityA lively pace with intensity adapted to ability
  • Suitable forPeople seeking overall fitness, an energetic class or fat-loss support

How is circuit training different from HIIT?

Circuit training describes a sequence of exercise stations and can be low or high intensity. HIIT alternates high-intensity effort with recovery. They can overlap but are not the same. See FAQ. To combine exercise with eating habits, explore the 21-day body-shaping plan。

Students stretching with yoga wheels Yoga

Yoga stretching | Flexibility, breathing and relaxation

Slow down with breathing and flexibility work to relax and lengthen the body. Stretching can complement strength training. Yoga originated in ancient India; modern fitness-based stretching classes often focus on flexibility, breath control and body awareness.

Yoga-stretching focus

  • Main focusFlexibility, breathing, relaxation and body awareness
  • Training methodMat-based stretches, sometimes with yoga wheels and other props
  • Pace and intensityA slower pace and gentler intensity
  • Suitable forPeople seeking flexibility, relief from tension or balance in their training

Should I choose yoga or Pilates?

Yoga stretching emphasises flexibility and relaxation, whilePilates focuses on core control and precision. You do not have to choose only one: a weekly Pilates session and a stretching session can balance strength and flexibility.

Students doing varied stretching exercises in the studio Mixed training

Varied body-shaping exercise | Women's fitness

Combine strength, core, cardio and stretching around your goals. The emphasis is on sustainable habits rather than one exercise promising results. This is also the main direction of the HK$90 body-shaping trial class : a manageable start, support for body-shaping goals and gradual progress.

Body-shaping class focus

  • Main focusWhole-body training, habit building and variety
  • Training methodA combination of exercise elements
  • Pace and intensityAdjusted to participants' level and goals
  • Suitable forPeople exploring different activities, still deciding on a focus or aiming to keep fit

Why can varied training be easier to maintain?

Repeating the same exercise can become dull. A varied programme keeps sessions interesting while balancing strength, cardio and flexibility. For exercise combined with eating habits, see the 21-day student stories(results vary).

WHAT TO EXPECT

What does a typical class include?

This is a common class structure; the coach adapts the actual content to the class and participants.

  2. 2. Warm up

Prepare the body with breathing and joint movement to help reduce injury risk.

  3. 3. Main training

Work on core, strength, balance or cardio according to the class, with exercises adapted to ability.

  4. 4. Stretch and unwind

Finish with stretching and breathing to settle the body.
